Hair extension aftercare

Proper aftercare is essential to maintain the appearance, longevity and health of both your extensions and natural hair. Following these recommendations will keep your extensions looking beautiful while protecting your natural hair between appointments.

Professional products

Use sulphate-free and paraben-free shampoo and conditioner to maintain the quality and longevity of your extensions. Apply a nourishing hair mask once per week for softness and hydration, and a lightweight hair oil through the mid-lengths and ends daily. Always apply a heat protectant before using hot tools, excessive heat without protection leads to dryness, split ends and premature deterioration.

Washing & drying

Brush gently before washing to remove any tangles. When shampooing, focus on cleansing the scalp and allow the product to flow through the lengths, avoid scrubbing aggressively or piling hair on top of your head. After washing, pat dry with a towel rather than rubbing. It is essential that the attachment area is completely dry after every wash. Moisture left around the wefts can lead to tangling and unnecessary stress on your natural hair.

Brushing

Brush your hair at least two to three times per day using a quality extension brush. Always support the attachment area with one hand while brushing to avoid placing tension on the wefts. Start at the ends and gradually work up towards the roots. Separate your rows daily and brush between each one to prevent tangling and matting around the attachment points.

Heat styling

Extensions can be styled just like your natural hair. Keep hot tools below 180°C where possible and always use a heat protectant before styling. Reducing heat use where you can will help maintain softness, shine and overall hair quality over time.

Sleeping

Brush thoroughly and ensure your hair is completely dry before bed. Secure in a loose braid or ponytail using a silk scrunchie to minimise friction overnight. A silk or satin pillowcase is highly recommended. Never sleep with damp extensions.

Summer care

Sun exposure, chlorine, sunscreen and outdoor activity can place additional stress on extensions during the warmer months. Increase your use of hydrating masks, leave-in treatments and hair oils throughout summer. Extra hydration is particularly important if you swim frequently.

For blonde extensions, it is essential to check that any sunscreen used does not contain Avobenzone. This ingredient causes a chemical reaction that results in irreversible pink discolouration.

Blonde Clients

Check all sunscreens, facial moisturisers and cosmetic products that may come into contact with your hair for Avobenzone before use. Use purple shampoo no more than once per week, overuse causes dryness and affects the overall condition of the hair.

Exercise

Brush before and after every workout and keep your hair secured in a braid or ponytail during activity. This minimises tangling and keeps your extensions looking neat between appointments.

Maintenance appointments

As your natural hair grows, the attachment points move further from the scalp. Leaving extensions in for extended periods without maintenance places unnecessary tension on the natural hair and increases the risk of tangling. We recommend maintenance every 6-8 weeks depending on your hair growth and individual wear.

Extension longevity

The lifespan of your extensions depends on your home care routine, product choices, heat usage and maintenance schedule. With proper care, premium extensions can remain beautiful for many months while maintaining their softness and shine.
